Lapis Lazuli

The name is derived from the Latin word “Lapis” meaning stone and the Persian word “lāzaward” meaning sky or heavens. Lapis lazuli is a vivid blue gemstone that has been prized for its beauty and historical significance for thousands of years. It is composed primarily of the minerals lazurite, calcite, and pyrite, which contribute to its striking blue colour and the presence of gold-coloured flecks.

Lapis lazuli's history dates back to at least 6,000 years ago when it was first mined in the Badakhshan region of Afghanistan. It was prized for its vivid blue colour. In ancient Mesopotamia, Egypt, and the Indus Valley, lapis lazuli was reserved for royalty and religious icons. It symbolised power, wisdom, and the heavens. The ancient Egyptians used lapis lazuli in jewelry, amulets, and burial masks. Sumerians used lapis lazuli to carve cuneiform texts, and it was an important medium for recording information in the ancient world. The Greeks and Romans also treasured lapis lazuli for its beauty and spiritual significance. It was often used in intaglio carvings and jewellery. Lapis lazuli was a rare and expensive stone in medieval Europe, reserved for religious art and the wealthiest patrons. During the Renaissance, lapis lazuli pigment was used by prominent artists like Leonardo da Vinci and Michelangelo. Today, lapis lazuli is still highly valued in jewellery and art. It is also used in crystal healing and metaphysical practices. Afghanistan remains a primary source, and the stone's rich history continues to be a source of fascination.

Metaphysically, lapis is associated with expression without holding back. It is believed that lapis encourages taking charge of your life and self awareness. Lapis connects communicative abilities between the mind, throat, and heart.
